Abstract
The authors attempted to investigate prevalences of psychoactive substances use disorders among adolescents in Korea in order to establish basic guidelines for preventing adolescents¢¥ maladaptive abuse or dependence on the psychoactive substances.
Brief sketch of our recent study were summarized as follows:
1) Schooling adolescents tended to abuse various substances such as cigarettes (25.7%) alcohol (25. 6%) stimulants (24.7%) inhalants (2.7%) hallucinogenics (0.7%) heroins (0.7%) and anxiolytics (0.6%).
2) Alcohol use among delinquent was about 10 times higher as 27.4% than among student as 2.6%. Delinquents whose parents showed permissive attitude toward their children¢¥s alcohol drinking showed 13 times higher than those whose parents didn¢¥t.
From these results, the authors suggested that their parents and other surrounding personnel¡¯s had to understand their children¢¥s problems to use psychoactive substance in order to prevent unexpected maladaptive drunken behaviors.
3) Recent studies on the prevalence of adolescent¢¥s cigarettes smoking and alcohol drinking showed that the rates of cigarette smoking among adolescents in 1978 was increased twice in 1984, and their alcohol use was also increased 3.3 times.
4) The rates of psychoactive substance use disorder was about 4 times higher in delinquents as 32. 7% than in students as 8.4%. These result suggested that psychoactive substance abuse was closely related adolescent delinquency.
